The willow tree gives us hope, a sense of belonging, and safety. The willow gives us the ability to let go of pain and suffering to grow new, strong and bold. The image of the willow tree is our path to stability, hope and healing.
The willow is a symbol of fertility and new life, a willow branch can be planted in ground and from it, a new tree will grow in its place. The willows’ ability to grow and survive is powerfully symbolic and show how we can thrive even in challenging conditions.
The willow was used in the past for its many healing properties. The bark could be used as a treatment for cold and flu and young twigs from the tree were once chewed in aid of pain relief.
Weeping willow flowers produce pollen and nectar that feed bees. The trees also attract other pollinators particularly butterflies and moths, which often use weeping willows as hosts in their larval stage. The hungry caterpillars feed on the tree’s foliage.
The willow tree attracts many birds due to its shelter and insect population for rich protein food, especially valuable for baby birds. The willow is a particular favourite tree for the woodpecker, to feed from.
